It’s a Sad, Sad Day….

I just read on CNN that Bob Keeshan, known by millions as Captain Kangaroo, died on Friday. First it was Mr. Greenjeans and now the Captain himself. Kids television will never be the same…

I really don’t remember much from my days as a young kid. I do remember watching Captain Kangaroo. I’m pretty sure I was a devoted fan. (Well, as devoted as any kid can be to a show I suppose)

Apparently (again, I don’t remember this first hand, but have memories based on the re-telling of the story by my mother) there was this one time (NOT at band camp) when my mom & I were in the elevator in our apartment building and this man got on the elevator. I apparently looked at the man and then looked at my mom. She knew what I was going to say and was not really wanting me to say it because it would embarrass her. I supposedly kept looking at the man and back to my mom before I finally said something along the lines of, “Mom, it’s Captain Kangaroo.” Yep, apparently this dude looked just like my beloved TV show host. Yep, apparently my mom turned many different shades of embarrassed. Yep, apparently the man chuckled and reassured my mom that he’d been told that many times. That’s my Captain Kangaroo story.

I was never really aware when the show went off the air. According to CNN it was 1991. Perhaps PBS will release some episodes on DVD so that our kids (whenever we get around to having them) will be able to laugh at us for the stupid shows we watched as a kid. (Just before going off to watch a show about a sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea – not that I’d ever permit that show in my house)

You want fucked up kids’ programming? Forget Spongebob, try Teletubbies version 2.0 – BooBah. It’s so acid trippy. Yikes.
